Bangladesh pays families to use the formal system. Every remittance that arrives through a bank or a licensed transfer company earns a 2.5% cash incentive from the government, and since May 2025 Bangladesh Bank has let the taka trade at a fully flexible, market-set rate. bdnews24 puts the Bangladeshi population of the US at around 800,000. This guide explains why the World Bank's survey makes their route look expensive, which payout suits which relative and the rules at each end. The general method for comparing providers is in how to send money internationally.
Why is sending money to Bangladesh expensive in the World Bank data?
Mostly because of the yardstick: the World Bank measured margins against 127 taka per dollar, while Bangladesh Bank's interbank rate in August 2025 was about 121.7.
| Amount sent | Average fee | Exchange-rate margin | Total cost (% of amount) | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | $5.06 | 5.08% | 7.61% | $15.21 |
| $500 | $7.90 | 5.08% | 6.66% | $33.27 |
In the Q3 2025 survey, sending $200 cost 7.61% on average and $500 cost 6.66%. Of the 42 US corridors in the World Bank snapshot this site uses, only five cost more at $200 and only two at $500. Fees weren't the cause: they averaged $5.06 and $7.90, in line with cheaper routes. The difference was a 5.08% exchange-rate margin at both amounts.
That margin compares each provider's rate with one market reference rate recorded for the survey, 127.00 taka per dollar. The services themselves paid between 117.31 and 121.60 taka, and the best of them came within about 0.1% to 0.5% of the interbank rate Bangladesh Bank was publishing at the time. Measured against that interbank rate, about 4.2 points of the average margin disappear, which by our calculation leaves the average $200 send costing roughly 3.5% in fee and margin together.
The spread between services was still wide. Fees ran from $0.99 to $16.15 on $200, and total costs from 5.17% to 12.41% by the World Bank's own measure. None of these figures include the 2.5% incentive, so what a family actually receives compares better than the survey suggests. To check a rate yourself, compare it with the mid-market rate and turn the gap into a percentage, as our guide to exchange-rate markups shows.
The 2.5% cash incentive: who gets it and how
The receiving bank or wallet provider adds 2.5% to the taka it credits, so a remittance worth Tk 40,000 at the transfer rate arrives as Tk 41,000. The finance minister's budget for FY2026-27, presented to parliament on June 11, 2026, keeps the rate at 2.5% for money sent through legal channels.
Your recipient doesn't apply for it or fill in a form. The bonus is built into how payouts are processed: bKash's published limits note that the incentive is added on top of the remittance amount, and Nagad's per-remittance ceiling of Tk 256,250 is exactly Tk 250,000 plus 2.5%.
Two practical points follow. The money must come through a bank or a licensed transfer company, so hundi and cash carried home in a suitcase earn nothing. And because the incentive is a percentage of the taka credited, a provider with a better exchange rate also produces a slightly larger bonus.
Bangladesh's tax law rewards the formal route as well. Paragraph 17 of the Sixth Schedule to the Income Tax Act 2023 exempts income that a Bangladeshi citizen earns abroad and brings home under the foreign remittance rules, a condition hundi transfers can't meet.
How many taka will $300 deliver?
At Bangladesh Bank's reference rate of about Tk 124.11 per dollar on November 1, 2026, $300 is worth Tk 37,233 before any fee, margin or incentive.
The table converts other amounts at the current mid-market rate and at a 1% and a 5% margin, the second close to the World Bank's average for this corridor.
| You send | At the mid-market rate | With a 1% markup | With a 5% markup |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | BDT 24,806 | BDT 24,558 | BDT 23,565 |
| $500 | BDT 62,014 | BDT 61,394 | BDT 58,914 |
| $1,000 | BDT 124,029 | BDT 122,789 | BDT 117,827 |
Worked example: $300 to a bKash wallet in Sylhet
- Mid-market value: $300 × 124.11 = Tk 37,233
- Provider quote: a $3.99 fee and a rate of Tk 123.20, a margin of 0.73%
- Converted amount: $300 × 123.20 = Tk 36,960, so the margin costs Tk 273, about $2.20
- Total cost to you: $3.99 + $2.20 = $6.19, or 2.06% of $300, and you pay $303.99
- Incentive: 2.5% of Tk 36,960 = Tk 924, so the wallet receives Tk 37,884, more than the mid-market value
- Cash-out: with bKash's Tk 30,000 daily cash limit, withdrawing all of it takes two days

Bank, wallet or cash: which payout works best in Bangladesh?
A bank deposit suits large or regular amounts, a bKash or Nagad wallet suits relatives far from a branch, and cash pickup suits those with neither.
Bank deposits move on one of three domestic rails once the dollars are converted. BEFTN, the Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network, has run since February 2011 and settles in batches during banking hours, so a credit can wait for the next session. NPSB, the National Payment Switch Bangladesh, has worked since 2012 and moves money in real time, and some banks use it to credit remittances around the clock. BD-RTGS handles large sums of Tk 100,000 or more, from Sunday to Thursday. The provider and its partner bank choose the rail, so ask which one they use if speed matters.
Mobile wallets are domestic services licensed by Bangladesh Bank, which has allowed mobile financial services since 2011. A person may hold only one account with each provider, and wallets can't send money out of the country. Since December 2023, Bangladesh Bank has capped a single remittance into a wallet at Tk 250,000, with the incentive credited on top. bKash sets no daily or monthly cap on incoming remittances; the limit that bites is cash, at Tk 30,000 a day and Tk 200,000 a month. Nagad lists Tk 256,250 per remittance with the incentive included, Tk 1 million a day and Tk 5 million a month. For how agent cash-out works, see mobile money explained.
Cash pickup is offered through bank branches and agent banking outlets. The recipient brings the National ID card, often called the NID, and the reference number, and the name on the transfer has to match the card.
Account and wallet details to collect
| Payout | What to collect | Format | Obviously fake example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank deposit by BEFTN or NPSB | Account holder's name, account number, bank, branch and routing number | Account length varies by bank; routing numbers are 9 digits | Account 0000000000000, routing 000000000 |
| bKash or Nagad wallet | Registered mobile number and the holder's name | 11 digits starting 01 | 01000000000 |
| Cash pickup | Full name as printed on the NID, city or branch, and the transfer reference | NID: 10 digits on smart cards, 13 or 17 on older cards | 0000000000 |
| Foreign currency account | Account number, bank, branch and the name on the account | As issued by the bank | Account 0000000000000 |
Bangladesh doesn't use IBANs, unlike Pakistan with its 24-character format explained in our IBAN guide. The routing number takes over the job of identifying the bank and branch, which makes it the field most worth double-checking against a checkbook or the bank's app.
The last row is new. Under a Bangladesh Bank circular of September 23, 2026, remittances sent through exchange houses and transfer companies can be credited in foreign currency to Private Foreign Currency (PFC) and Non-resident Foreign Currency Deposit (NFCD) accounts. A Bangladeshi in the US building dollar savings at home can now send into such an account without converting to taka first, if the provider's partner bank supports it.
Why do some families still use hundi?
Hundi dealers promise a better rate, doorstep cash and no paperwork, and for years the gap between official and street dollar rates made that offer tempting.
In a hundi deal, nothing crosses the border through the banking system. A dealer in the US takes your dollars, a partner in Bangladesh hands your family taka from local cash, and the two settle between themselves later.
The rate advantage has narrowed. In late August 2026, banks were buying remittance dollars at Tk 122.30, which the incentive lifts to about Tk 125.36, while licensed money changers could pay no more than Tk 125.50 for cash dollars under their association's new caps. Cash dollars had briefly touched Tk 128 in the kerb market, so a hundi dealer can sometimes still beat the formal route by about 2%.
That edge carries a lot of risk. On June 25, 2026, the finance minister told parliament that Bangladesh's Financial Intelligence Unit had frozen about 55,000 mobile wallet accounts linked to online gambling and digital hundi, and on August 3 it began freezing 14,000 more. A frozen wallet locks your family out of the money. Hundi also forfeits the incentive and every US disclosure and cancellation right, and nobody will chase a dealer who keeps the dollars. Bangladesh treats hundi as an illegal channel, and in the US, transmitting money for others without a license is a federal crime for the dealer. Our money transfer scams guide covers how informal offers go wrong.
Your side of the transfer: US tax and consumer rules
Bangladesh's rules decide what arrives; three US rules decide what you pay and how you're protected. Since January 1, 2026, a federal excise tax has applied to remittances paid for in physical form, and it is 1% of the amount sent, on transfers paid with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a similar physical instrument (IRS, as of Nov 1, 2026). Paying from a bank account or card avoids it, because the law exempts these: Transfers funded from a bank or other financial-institution account, or with a US-issued debit or credit card. The Treasury's rules for the tax were still proposed regulations in November 2026, and our remittance transfer tax guide follows the details.
Before you pay, a US provider has to disclose the exchange rate, its fees, any taxes and the taka your recipient will get. A transfer can still be stopped for up to 30 minutes after paying, for a full refund (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as of Nov 1, 2026), as long as the taka hasn't been collected or credited; see remittance transfer rights for errors and refunds.
Support for parents and siblings counts as a gift under US tax law. Once your gifts to one person pass $19,000 per recipient (IRS, as of Nov 1, 2026) in 2026, you report them on Form 709, and tax itself begins only after the lifetime exemption is used up; gift tax on money sent abroad explains. If you hold your own NFCD account in Bangladesh, the FBAR rule applies too, once the trigger is met: More than $10,000 in total across foreign financial accounts at any time in the year (IRS, as of Nov 1, 2026).
When are Bangladeshi banks closed, and when do remittances peak?
Bangladeshi banks close on Fridays and Saturdays and for long Eid holidays, and remittances surge in the weeks before each Eid.
In 2026, Eid al-Fitr fell on March 21 and Eid al-Adha on May 28, a day later than in Pakistan and the Gulf, and a gazette gave a seven-day holiday from May 25 to 31 around the second Eid. March 2026 set Bangladesh's monthly record of $3.75 billion, and May brought $3.44 billion. For 2027, astronomers expect Eid al-Fitr around March 10 and Eid al-Adha around May 17, with Bangladesh's moon-sighting committee setting the actual dates.
National days close banks too, including Independence Day on March 26, Bengali New Year on April 14 and Victory Day on December 16. Wallet credits and NPSB transfers can keep moving through weekends and many holidays at banks that support them, but BEFTN and BD-RTGS stop, so send at least a week before a festival if the money must land in a bank account.
How much does Bangladesh receive, and from where?
Bangladesh received a record $35.59 billion in wage earners' remittances in FY26, the year to June 2026, up 17.3% on the year before.
Saudi Arabia sent the most, $5.85 billion, followed by the UK ($5.07 billion), the UAE ($4.58 billion), Malaysia ($3.40 billion) and the US ($3.01 billion). The US figure fell 36.3% from $4.73 billion, but much of the drop is bookkeeping. A Bangladesh Bank official told bdnews24 that US-based transfer companies had collected migrant earnings in West Asia and routed them through US gateways, so Gulf money was counted as American; since April 2025, banks must record the country where the money actually came from.
| Country | Year | Remittances received | Share of GDP | 10 years earlier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh | 2025 | $33.9 billion | 7.4% | $15.3 billion |
| Pakistan | 2025 | $40.5 billion | 9.9% | $19.3 billion |
The new fiscal year has started strongly. Inflows from the US rose 19% to $540.2 million in July and August 2026, and total remittances from July to October reached $11.47 billion, 13% more than a year earlier. The US to Pakistan guide covers the other corridor in the table above, where the central bank requires the receiving side to be free of charge.
Mistakes that delay or lose a Bangladesh transfer
Most failed transfers on this route come down to details. Bengali names have several common English spellings, such as Mohammad and Mohammed, and a name that doesn't match the NID or the bank record can hold up a credit or a cash payout until someone corrects it. A routing number for the wrong branch can make a BEFTN credit fail and return.
Size matters for wallets. A Tk 250,000 remittance into bKash is more than a full month of the wallet's Tk 200,000 cash-out limit, so if your family needs notes rather than a balance, send to a bank account or split the money over time.
Watch for impersonators. No bank or wallet company needs a PIN or one-time code to release a remittance, and anyone who calls your relatives asking for one is trying to empty the wallet. Finally, leave time before Eid: a transfer sent on the last working day before a seven-day holiday may sit with a bank until the holiday ends.
