Saudi Arabia was the source of 6.7% of the money India received from abroad in 2023-24, according to the Reserve Bank of India's sixth remittances survey, down from 11.6% in 2016-17. The six Gulf states together sent 37.9%, against 46.7% seven years earlier. Two features set this corridor apart. The average fee in the World Bank's price survey is the same at both amounts it checks, so how often you send matters as much as where. And Saudi rules tie every transfer to your Iqama, which decides what you can do when it lapses. For the cost ideas that apply on every route, start with the money transfer guide.
What does it cost to send riyals to India?
In the World Bank's Q3 2025 survey, sending SAR 750 to India cost 5.59% on average, and sending SAR 1,870 cost 3.07%.
The survey checks SAR 750 and SAR 1,870, the local equivalents of $200 and $500, so those are the amounts the two rows of the table refer to. The average fee was SAR 31.65 at both, and the average exchange-rate margin 1.37%. On the smaller transfer the fee alone took 4.2% of the money; on the larger one, 1.7%. That flat fee is the most useful fact about this corridor: fewer, larger transfers cost less per riyal.
| Amount sent | Average fee | Exchange-rate margin | Total cost (% of amount) | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAR 750 | SAR 31.65 | 1.37% | 5.59% | SAR 41.95 |
| SAR 1,870 | SAR 31.65 | 1.37% | 3.07% | SAR 57.32 |
Rates move daily, so the table below converts riyals at the live mid-market rate and shows what a 0.5% or a 2% margin would leave your family.
| You send | At the mid-market rate | With a 0.5% markup | With a 2% markup |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAR 1,000 | ₹25,355 | ₹25,229 | ₹24,848 |
| SAR 2,000 | ₹50,711 | ₹50,457 | ₹49,696 |
| SAR 3,000 | ₹76,066 | ₹75,686 | ₹74,545 |
| SAR 5,000 | ₹126,777 | ₹126,143 | ₹124,241 |
Every quote reduces to one number: the rupees that arrive for the riyals you hand over. The exchange-rate markups guide shows how to back a margin out of any quoted rate, and the money transfer cost calculator combines it with the fee.
How the riyal's dollar peg sets your rupee rate
The Saudi Central Bank, known as SAMA, has held the riyal at 3.75 per US dollar since 1986, through two Gulf wars and several oil-price slumps. For a sender, that turns SAR to INR into one division: take the rate on the dollar to rupee converter and divide it by 3.75. On November 2, 2026, about ₹95.07 per dollar meant roughly ₹25.35 per riyal.
So a provider quoting ₹25.10 per riyal is keeping about 1%: the gap of ₹0.25 is 0.99% of ₹25.35. The peg also means the riyal's rupee value changes only when the rupee moves against the dollar. Watching Saudi news for a better moment achieves nothing, and nobody forecasts the dollar-rupee rate reliably enough to plan around it.
Where can you send from in Saudi Arabia?
From a bank account, a bank-run remittance center or a licensed money exchange center, all of them supervised by the Saudi Central Bank.
Look a firm up on SAMA's list of licensed entities before you register with it. Money exchange centers come in two categories, and only Category A centers may send and receive remittances; Category B centers can change currency but cannot transfer money abroad.
| Bank app or online banking | Bank remittance center | Category A money exchange center | |
|---|---|---|---|
| To start | An account in your own name | A membership opened in person with your Iqama | A membership opened in person with your Iqama |
| Each transfer | Sign in and pay from the account | Membership number plus your original Iqama | Membership number plus your original Iqama |
| Limits | Set by the bank | Set by the center for your profile and activity | Your monthly salary, capped at SAR 50,000 a month and SAR 500,000 a year |
| Hours | Any time | Branch hours | Branch hours |
Whichever channel you choose, the money has to leave in your name. Once you hold an Iqama, or three months after you arrive, SAMA's rules bar banks from sending transfers for an expatriate except from an account in that person's name, or through a customer number in the bank's express transfer service that is tied to the Iqama number. Memberships cannot be shared, and the opening form asks you to confirm a direct relationship with the people you pay. Centers also record how much you expect to send each month and check it against your income, so large or unusual amounts can prompt questions about where the money came from.
Paying a center electronically, instead of carrying cash to the counter, comes with its own protections. SAMA requires money exchange centers and bank remittance centers to receive such payments into a dedicated account, to agree the fee and exchange rate with you before the transaction and keep a record of both, and to refund a cancelled transfer to the card or payment method you used within three working days, never in cash.
What does your Iqama status change?
SAMA ties accounts and remittance memberships to a valid Iqama, so arriving, letting the permit lapse and leaving for good each change what you can send.
| Your situation | What SAMA's rules say |
|---|---|
| First three months, Iqama not yet issued | An account opened at your employer's request can make transfers, capped at SAR 10,000 each for professionals such as doctors and engineers and lower for other jobs; a remittance membership on the entry permit lasts three months |
| Valid Iqama | Transfers only from an account in your name, or through a customer number linked to your Iqama |
| Iqama expired | No outgoing transactions until you renew; salaries and incoming transfers still arrive; the account is frozen after 90 days and its balance moved to a holding account after 180 |
| Final exit | Expatriates' accounts must be closed |
Two habits follow from those rules. Renew the Iqama before it lapses if you support family every month, because an expired permit stops transfers even while your salary keeps arriving. And before a final exit, send home what you need, since the account has to close when you leave for good.
Does Saudi Arabia tax the money you send home?
No tax applies to the transfer itself; the only Saudi tax in the price is 15% VAT on an explicit fee.
The kingdom has looked at a remittance levy before and turned it down. In January 2017 the Ministry of Finance denied any plan to charge fees on expatriates' transfers, citing its commitment to the free flow of capital, and the Shura Council voted down a proposed fee days later. The council shelved a 6% proposal again in 2018. Rumours of a new remittance fee still surface on social media, so rely on official announcements.
VAT is set by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority. Its implementing regulations exempt financial services whose price sits inside a margin or spread, while services charged for by an explicit fee or commission carry the standard 15% rate. A SAR 25 transfer fee therefore costs SAR 28.75, and a fee-free quote that builds its price into the rate carries no VAT at all.
Worked example: SAR 3,000 a month: one transfer or three
On November 2, 2026, the reference rate was about ₹25.35 per riyal. Take a provider that charges a SAR 25 fee plus SAR 3.75 VAT and pays ₹25.05 per riyal, a margin of about 1.2%.
- One transfer of SAR 3,000: you pay SAR 3,028.75 and ₹75,150 arrives (3,000 × 25.05).
- The cost of that transfer: SAR 3,028.75 is worth ₹76,778.81 at mid-market, so ₹1,628.81 goes on the fee, VAT and margin, about SAR 64.25 or 2.12% of what you paid.
- Three transfers of SAR 1,000 each: the same ₹75,150 arrives, because the margin is the same, but you pay SAR 28.75 three times, SAR 86.25 in all, which is SAR 57.50 more.
Over a year, sending once a month instead of three times saves about SAR 690 at this price, roughly ₹17,500.
Can sarie send riyals straight to India?
No: sarie, SAMA's instant payment system, moves riyals only between banks in Saudi Arabia, so it cannot pay an Indian account.
Launched in 2021, sarie settles transfers of up to SAR 20,000 instantly at any hour. Payments of up to SAR 2,500 can go to a mobile number, national ID or Iqama number, or email address without adding the payee first, and the system shows the payee's name before you confirm. That makes it handy for moving your own money between Saudi accounts, not for paying family abroad.
The cross-border leg belongs to the provider, which converts your riyals and pays out over India's domestic rails. IMPS credits up to ₹5 lakh per transaction within seconds, around the clock. UPI works when the provider offers UPI payouts and the recipient's UPI ID is linked to a KYC-compliant account that accepts foreign inward transfers. For bigger sums, an account number and IFSC remain the more dependable details.
Details and rules at the Indian end
Your family needs one of two sets of details: an account number with the branch's IFSC and the name exactly as the bank records it, or a UPI ID. Use purpose code P1301, family maintenance, for regular support. Money from relatives is not taxable for the recipient, while gifts from people who are not relatives become taxable once they total more than ₹50,000 in a tax year.
A non-resident Indian can send Saudi earnings to an NRE account in their own name, where the balance stays repatriable and India does not tax the interest while they remain non-resident. Rent, pension or other income that arises in India belongs in an NRO account. The US to India guide covers the Indian rules in depth, from payout rails and recipient details to cash-pickup limits and the full list of relatives.
Ramadan, Eid, Hajj and Diwali on the calendar
Saudi Arabia's weekend is Friday and Saturday, while Indian bank branches close on Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. A transfer that needs a working day at both ends can lose most of a week around a holiday; payouts over IMPS and UPI do not wait for either calendar.
| Date | Event | What it means for transfers |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday, November 8, 2026 | Diwali | Peak family demand; send a few days early |
| From about February 8, 2027 | Ramadan expected to begin, subject to moon sighting | Banks open 10am to 4pm; remittance centers and payment firms work six flexible hours between 9:30am and 5:30pm |
| March 7 to 11, 2027 | Saudi financial institutions closed for Eid al-Fitr | Branches in busy areas, airports and border crossings must open and publish their hours |
| March 10, 2027 | Id-ul-Fitr holiday in India | Indian bank branches closed |
| May 16 to 20, 2027 | Saudi financial institutions closed for Eid al-Adha | Branches and exchange outlets at Hajj terminals, the holy sites and border crossings stay open through the Hajj season |
| May 17, 2027 | Bakrid holiday in India | Indian bank branches closed |
| Friday, October 29, 2027 | Diwali | Peak family demand again |
Saudi government salaries arrive on the 27th of each month, moved to the Thursday before when the 27th is a Friday and to the Sunday after when it is a Saturday, so November 2026 pay lands on Thursday, November 26. Private employers set their own pay dates. Founding Day, February 22, and National Day, September 23, are also holidays for Saudi financial institutions.
Fraud aimed at Indian workers in Saudi Arabia
Impersonation is the common thread. SAMA has warned of calls and messages from people who claim to work for it, tell victims that money is being held for them or that account details must be updated, and send phone numbers or phishing links. SAMA says it keeps no deposits for individuals and carries out no transactions on their behalf, and that such schemes aim either to steal money or to use the victim's account for illegal transactions.
Three other patterns recur:
- Account and membership renting. Never let anyone receive or forward money through your account or remittance membership, for a fee or as a favour. SAMA's rules forbid sharing a membership or using it for anything other than your own transfers.
- Fake embassy accounts. The Embassy of India in Riyadh has warned of fake social media accounts and emails that use its name to approach Indian citizens; its official email addresses end in @mea.gov.in.
- Unlicensed currency and forex dealers. SAMA prohibits unlicensed people and firms from acting as currency or forex intermediaries, and a dealer missing from its list leaves you no recourse if the money disappears.
Report fraud to your bank at once and to the Saudi police. If the caller or the receiving account is in India, also report it on India's 1930 cybercrime helpline. Money transfer scams explains the patterns seen on every route, and the guide to sending money from the UAE to India covers the other main Gulf corridor.
