The UAE sends India more money than any country except the United States: 19.2% of India's inward remittances in 2023-24, according to the Reserve Bank of India's latest survey, though that share has slipped from 27% in 2016-17 as the US share grew. Most of it moves through two channels: exchange houses, at the counter or in their apps, and the banking apps attached to the accounts where wages are paid. Both are cheap by world standards. What separates a good quote from a poor one is the margin, the 5% VAT on fees and the timing around payday. The money transfer guide explains the cost concepts that apply on every route.
How much does it cost to send dirhams to India?
In the World Bank's Q3 2025 survey, sending AED 735, about $200, to India cost 3.72% on average, and sending AED 1,835 cost 2.19%.
The survey prices this corridor at those two dirham amounts, the local equivalents of $200 and $500, so read the two rows of the table below as AED 735 and AED 1,835. Margins averaged 0.75% on both, which leaves the fee as the main cost: AED 21.77 on the smaller amount and AED 26.40 on the larger.
| Amount sent | Average fee | Exchange-rate margin | Total cost (% of amount) | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AED 735 | AED 21.77 | 0.75% | 3.72% | AED 27.32 |
| AED 1,835 | AED 26.40 | 0.75% | 2.19% | AED 40.25 |
A benchmark tells you whether a quote is reasonable, but the rupees that land are what your family spends. The table converts dirhams at the live mid-market rate and at two margins.
| You send | At the mid-market rate | With a 0.5% markup | With a 2% markup |
|---|---|---|---|
| AED 500 | ₹12,945 | ₹12,880 | ₹12,686 |
| AED 1,000 | ₹25,890 | ₹25,761 | ₹25,373 |
| AED 2,500 | ₹64,726 | ₹64,402 | ₹63,431 |
| AED 5,000 | ₹129,452 | ₹128,805 | ₹126,863 |
A 2% margin takes ₹2 of every ₹100 the transfer is worth, which on AED 5,000 outweighs most counter fees. The exchange-rate markups guide shows how to work out a margin from any quoted rate, and the money transfer cost calculator adds the fee for you.
Why does the dollar peg matter for AED to INR?
Because the Central Bank of the UAE holds the dirham at 3.6725 per US dollar, the AED to INR rate is simply USD to INR divided by 3.6725.
The central bank buys dollars at 3.672 dirhams and sells them at 3.673, so the band is tiny. Day-to-day moves in your rate come almost entirely from the rupee's moves against the dollar, which you can follow on the USD to INR converter. On November 2, 2026, a reference rate of about ₹95.07 per dollar implied about ₹25.89 per dirham.
The peg has two practical uses. Checking a quote takes one division, so there is no excuse for accepting a rate you can't verify. Suppose an exchange house offers ₹25.60 per dirham while USD to INR stands at 95.07: the dirham benchmark is 95.07 ÷ 3.6725 = 25.89, so the margin is (25.89 − 25.60) ÷ 25.89, about 1.1%. And waiting for the dirham to strengthen against the dollar achieves nothing, because only the dollar-rupee leg moves, and nobody can reliably forecast that.
Should you use an exchange house or a bank app?
Both can be cheap; exchange houses add walk-in counters, cash payment and cash pickup networks, while bank apps send straight from the account where your salary lands.
| Feature | Exchange house counter | Exchange house app | Bank app or online banking |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Cash, card or bank transfer | Card or bank transfer | Debit from your account |
| ID check | Emirates ID or passport shown at the counter | ID scanned when you register | Done when the account was opened |
| Payout in India | Bank deposit, UPI where offered, cash pickup | Bank deposit, UPI where offered | Bank deposit, sometimes by SWIFT |
| What to compare | Fee plus 5% VAT, and the margin | Fee plus 5% VAT, and the margin | Fee plus 5% VAT, the margin and any charges along the way |
| Hours | Branch opening hours | Any time | Any time |
Whichever you choose, look the firm up on the Central Bank of the UAE's register of licensed financial institutions, where money transfer firms appear under the exchange business licence. A licence brings the firm under the central bank's supervision and under Sanadak, the ombudsman unit for central bank-licensed institutions, which takes up complaints the firm itself has failed to resolve.
Many exchange houses also act as Wage Protection System agents that pay wages onto payroll cards, so a worker without a bank account can often send from the same place the salary arrives.
How do you send money from the UAE to India, step by step?
Collect exact details, check the licence, price the same amount with two or three providers, then pay and keep the receipt. Once the recipient is saved, a repeat transfer takes minutes.
Collect the recipient's details
Ask for the account number, the 11-character IFSC and the name exactly as the bank records it, or a UPI ID that accepts transfers from abroad. A photo of the passbook or a screenshot from the banking app is safer than a typed message, because one wrong digit can credit a stranger.
Check the provider's licence
Search the Central Bank of the UAE's register for the firm's legal name before you register with it or hand over cash at a counter.
Price the same amount everywhere
Ask each provider what arrives in rupees for the same dirham amount, with the fee and its VAT included, and compare the result with USD to INR divided by 3.6725.
Choose the purpose and pay
Pick family maintenance for regular support or a personal gift for one-off money, then pay from your own account, card or payroll card so the payment is traceable to you.
Keep the receipt and reference number
The reference lets the provider trace a late payment, and the receipt records the rate and fee you were promised.
How does WPS payday affect your transfer?
Since June 1, 2026, WPS wages have been due on the first day of each month, so transfers tend to bunch into the first days of the month.
The Wage Protection System, which the Central Bank of the UAE introduced in 2009, requires private employers to pay wages through banks, exchange houses or financial institutions the central bank authorises. Under Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation Ministerial Resolution No. 0340 of 2026, the previous month's wages fall due on the first of each month, and the old 15-day grace period has gone.
For a sender, that makes the first days of the month a likely rush, with longer counter queues and a better chance that a transfer needing a manual check waits its turn. Exchange rates follow no payday pattern you can rely on, so there is no rate to gain by rushing; what you control is when you send and how. Since October 1, 2018, exchange houses have paid WPS wages onto payroll cards or into bank accounts rather than in cash, so a payroll card holder may be able to send straight from the exchange house that issued the card.
Can you send dirhams straight to a UPI ID?
Yes, if your provider pays out through UPI: the recipient gives a UPI ID linked to a KYC-compliant Indian account and allows international receipts in the app.
Aani, the UAE's own instant payment system, run by Al Etihad Payments, is a separate network. Its help pages say it currently moves dirhams only between institutions licensed in the UAE. Al Etihad Payments, a central bank subsidiary, chose a technology vendor in February 2026 to build an international remittance gateway whose first planned link is with UPI, but that service was not live as of November 2026. Until it is, a payment over Aani stops at the UAE border.
Inside India, IMPS moves up to ₹5 lakh per transaction in seconds, at any hour. UPI limits depend on the provider and the recipient's bank, so for a large sum an account number and IFSC are the safer details to collect.
Is VAT charged on remittance fees in the UAE?
Yes: the UAE charges 5% VAT on an explicit transfer fee, while the exchange-rate margin, which is not billed separately, carries no VAT.
The Federal Tax Authority's financial services guide lists transfer fees and SWIFT fees as standard-rated, and the VAT Executive Regulation exempts financial services paid for only through a margin or spread. So an AED 25 fee costs AED 26.25, while a quote that builds its whole price into the rate attracts no VAT. Neither style is automatically cheaper; the rupees delivered for the dirhams you hand over decide it.
Worked example: AED 2,000 priced two ways
On November 2, 2026, the reference rate was about ₹25.89 per dirham, so AED 2,000 was worth ₹51,780 at mid-market.
- Counter quote: an AED 25 fee plus AED 1.25 VAT, paid on top, and ₹25.70 per dirham. You hand over AED 2,026.25 and ₹51,400 arrives (2,000 × 25.70).
- App quote: no fee, so no VAT, and ₹25.56 per dirham. You hand over AED 2,000 and ₹51,120 arrives (2,000 × 25.56).
- Counter cost: AED 2,026.25 is worth ₹52,460 at mid-market, so the gap is ₹1,060, about AED 40.93 or 2.02% of what you paid.
- App cost: ₹51,780 − ₹51,120 = ₹660, about AED 25.49 or 1.27%.
Per dirham handed over, the counter delivers ₹25.37 and the app ₹25.56. The fee-free quote wins here despite its weaker headline rate, because the fee and its VAT cost more than the extra margin.
The UAE levies no income tax on individuals and no tax on remittances, so VAT on the fee is the only UAE tax in the price. Tax rules change, so check anything unusual, such as large transfers for property, with a tax adviser.
What should your family in India have ready?
An account number with the branch's 11-character IFSC, or a UPI ID that accepts foreign transfers, plus the account holder's name exactly as the bank holds it.
Gulf earnings usually sit best in an NRE account. Its balance and interest can leave India freely, and India does not tax the interest while you live abroad; because the UAE taxes no personal income either, that interest goes untaxed in both countries, unless you are also a US taxpayer. An NRO account suits income that arises in India, such as rent. For the recipient, money from relatives is tax-free, while gifts from friends become taxable once they total more than ₹50,000 in a tax year. Choose the family-maintenance purpose code, P1301, for regular support.
The guide to sending money from the US to India covers these India-side rules in depth, including recipient detail formats, cash-pickup limits and the full list of relatives.
Paydays, Onam, Eid and Diwali
Three calendars overlap on this corridor. UAE paydays fall on the first of the month. Indian festivals drive the largest family transfers: Diwali is on Sunday, November 8, 2026 and Friday, October 29, 2027, and Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, falls on September 12, 2027. RBI's survey ranks Kerala among the three states that receive the most remittances.
Eid dates depend on the moon. India's central government holiday list for 2027 sets Id-ul-Fitr on March 10 and Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) on May 17, and UAE public holidays are announced close to each date, so check the official announcement before planning around them.
Indian bank closures matter for any leg that moves by SWIFT: banks shut on Sundays, on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month and on national and state holidays. IMPS, UPI, NEFT and RTGS keep running through all of them, which is one more reason to prefer a provider that pays out on those rails.
Scams that target Indian workers in the UAE
Impostor calls lead the list. In July 2025 the Consulate General of India in Dubai warned that fraudsters were spoofing the phone and WhatsApp numbers of the Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendra, its help centre for Indian workers, to pressure people into paying. It said neither the consulate nor the help centre contacts people by phone or WhatsApp to request payments. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi has warned of callers extorting money over invented immigration problems, and says it never asks for an OTP, PIN or bank details.
Other patterns to watch:
- Calls in the central bank's name. The Central Bank of the UAE says it never emails from public webmail addresses, does not contact individuals through social media and will not honour promises made by impostors.
- Requests for OTPs or ID details. The UAE Banks Federation warns that callers posing as your bank create urgency to get a one-time password; no bank needs one from you over the phone.
- Cheap rates from unlicensed agents. A person or shop that is not on the central bank's register leaves you no recourse if the money never arrives.
Report fraud to your bank and the police, and report calls from Indian numbers to India's cybercrime portal. Money transfer scams covers the patterns that appear on every route, and the guide to sending money from Saudi Arabia to India covers the other big Gulf corridor.
